I think I made a mistake, oh, about 10 years ago, and it’s all Gary Beck‘s fault. Let me explain. Since I understand some of you have a problem with numbers, I’ll go slowly.
Back when I only had a season or two of hitting stats to work with, some numbers popped out at me. Beck reached base on errors 12 times in 1997, our first year. Then he did it again, 12 more in 1998, but he did bat 30 more times. (That last part should have been my clue.)
Beck seemed to have a knack for creating defensive errors, so I looked at Steve Schmidt. Schmitty only drew 5 errors in 1997, but that number jumped to 12 in 1998 … and then 22, and 19, and 19 again.
