OK, they got us

What were you expecting? With the league championship wrapped up, it was our one chance to relax in summer league, and we relaxed right into a 14-4 loss to Appleway Chiropractic.

The coach fulfilled his lifelong dream of making a pitching change mid-inning. That move actually worked. Beck hitting cleanup? Not so much.

Somewhere in the middle

There’s a balancing point somewhere between Superior, which had 38 teams on three ballfields, and Coeur d’Alene, which drew 4 teams to a tournament in a city with eight ballfields. With about a hundred men’s teams from which to draw, something just isn’t right when only four teams show up to play. I don’t know what . . . → Read More: Somewhere in the middle

That was for Papa

Thursday night’s victory was the culmination of all the hard work and sweat we’ve burned this season and in seasons past. With the 17-16 win over Pita Pit on Thursday night, the O-fers moved to 12-1, two games in front with one game to play.

For one brief, shining moment

… we had 11 players for Superior. But with a little help from our friends, we managed to get through the games, have a little fun and play a little ball.

It is quite clear that Frank Morden is to blame for every fly ball that has dropped in our outfield for the past three years. He . . . → Read More: For one brief, shining moment

Action-packed art

A dynamic almost-spectacular catch by Mike Black in St. Regis…

Mike Black had the ball in his glove for only a brief moment, but it was a heck of an effort.

… and an, umm, not so dynamic portrait of Bryan Sullivan showing his range and reactions at second base:

O-fers win 10th in league

Hey! Ten wins in league with three games to go. If we didn’t have fifteen teams in the league, I’d say that gives us a decent shot at a trophy. This win came 25-18 over Longhammer Hardwood, and it took everything we had to stay ahead of their sticks.

Our offense, St. Regis notwithstanding, is really clicking right . . . → Read More: O-fers win 10th in league

Another Regis pix

Getting the stats up to date might require another weekend. I’m still sleeping the last one off.

O-fers get salty Bohn in Regis

The old salt, Mark Bohn, fields a grounder on Saturday, July 4, 2009, in St. Regis, Mont.

I’ve always said that my definition of a good tournament is one that you play more games than you paid for. In the case of St. Regis this year, it looked like it was gonna be a not-so-good weekend after we dropped our first two games: Three-game guarantee, three games played.

But no, we hadda go and win that third game 20-17, ensuring we’d be back for the 8 a.m. Sunday morning game. Free softball, yes, but still … our Sunday record overall is about 8-50 over the years, plus this was Sunday morning in St. Regis, and as sure as the sun rises in the east, I’m sure that we’ve never, ever, ever won that first Sunday morning game in St. Regis. Making matters worse, we were facing the Mullan Boys, and they absolutely own us in Montana. I mean, bought, paid for and fully receipted.

All the factors were stacked against us, even the umpire, who made two lazy-ass calls at second base in the late innings. Bad calls are bad calls, but calls made in advance of the actual play are a travesty. After the second call, Bryan Sullivan was so mad that he ran the risk of being the first player ever tossed for saying “Jiminy Crickets” on a ballfield. Gary Beck was riding the umpire from the outfield as well, saying, “If Sully goes, we all go!”

Duane Miller in left field was secretly rooting for the ejection so he could be off the hook for anything he did the rest of the summer.

Back on the right track

As usual, the quick update first. We scored three in the top of the first, basically allowed Keller Williams to score nine in response, then we dropped an 18-run bomb on them in the second inning … and that was that. The final was 33-12 in four innings.
