Team letters out today, maybe

We used to have such a perfectly executed schedule of events. Quad Park held its managers meeting the third Tuesday of each month, and we’d start practicing on the Sunday following. That usually gave us about six weeks to prepare for the preseason tournament in early to mid-April.

Unfortunately, with Quad Park gone, people are getting a little crazy. I think what’s happening is, other teams are calling around to secure their players, maybe earlier than they did in the past, and some of our guys hear about it (or are lightly recruited). So instead of relaxing and enjoying the snow outside, they get a little antsy, all because there isn’t a magical date of the manager’s meeting to kick things into motion anymore. (Coeur d’Alene has a managers meeting, but it’s not an event like Quad’s was.)

Really, we should do a Midnight Madness like in college hoops, and nobody should be allowed to talk about softball until then. We all get together at midnight, have a couple drinks, maybe hit some Nerf balls inside the bar, then after all that, the next day everyone is allowed to get crazy.

To make a long story short, unless I get called about a job Monday, team letters should be going out in the mail. I’ve decided to write in lieu of trying to get your attention in a pizza joint for a number of reasons, not least of which is that you’re mostly too loud to talk over.
